About Masaka Backpackers
Masaka Backpackers is a perfect stop-over when passing by Masaka town in Uganda. Relax and enjoy budget accommodation, campsite, restaurant and bar run by a local family.
Masaka Backpackers is a family-run business, established in 1997 by the owner Mr. Joseph Matovu. We offer various types of accommodation including camping, dormitories and single and double rooms as well as a restaurant and bar.
Most of our customers during the past twenty years have visited us from Europe, particularly from Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and the UK. We can offer our customers a friendly, home-like atmosphere. You can also enjoy leisure activities including a walking tour to the nearby villages accompanied by our tour guide dog Odi who is also responsible for night-time security.
Services
Our restaurant caters breakfast, lunch, and dinner on demand. Our breakfast menu includes eggs, omelettes, bacon, toast, sandwiches, pancakes, and fruit salad. For lunch and dinner we have, for example, salads, soups, spaghetti, barbecue, grilled fish, beef and pork with chips or mashed potatoes.
WiFi and transport services are available for extra charge. A pick-up from Entebbe Airport costs US $70 and takes about five hours.

Rooms & Camping
We have small (3-6 persons) and large (10 persons) dormitories with attached or shared bathrooms. Altogether there is space for 28 people, which makes our premises also suitable for tour groups. For those wanting more privacy, we have single and double rooms with bathrooms.
All rooms have mosquito nets and there is a secure parking area right in front of the hostel.
Our camping site is ideal for tents, campervans and motor-homes, and campers have all the necessary services available.
Volunteering opportunities
During the past years, we have hosted many skilled volunteers from electricians to carpenters. If you are interested in helping in various local projects (such as schools and orphanages), please contact us for more information: joseph@masakahostels.com.
We welcome retired people who have a lot of time in their hands! If you have old clothes or some other items to give away, please consider donating them to the people in our village. They are grateful for all kind of assistance and attention.
We are located conveniently between Kampala, Tanzania (Bukoba) and Rwanda (Kigali), making us a perfect stop-over. After a long day of travel, our customers appreciate the hostel's relaxing setting and the big green garden.
