About Masaka Backpackers

The perfect location for a holiday, a business-stay or a stop-over.

Masaka Backpackers is a welcoming, family-run hostel founded in 1997 by the owner Mr. Joseph Matovu. For nearly three decades, we have been offering travellers a comfortable, relaxed, and affordable place to stay in southern Uganda.

We provide a range of accommodation options to suit every traveller: a fully equipped private holiday house, private rooms for one to six guests, two spacious dormitories for groups, and a large green garden with plenty of space for camping.

Our on-site restaurant serves freshly prepared breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Throughout the day, you can enjoy hot and cold drinks in our relaxed garden setting.

Masaka Backpackers is conveniently located just outside Masaka town, along the main road connecting Kampala, Tanzania (Bukoba), and Rwanda (Kigali). Although easily accessible, we are set in a peaceful and safe rural environment — the perfect place to unwind.

Our spacious garden is one of our guests’ favourite features. Surrounded by greenery, it is ideal for relaxing, meeting fellow travellers, or enjoying an evening campfire under the stars

We welcome guests from all over the world and pride ourselves on offering a warm, home-like atmosphere. We speak English.

Services

Our restaurant caters breakfast, lunch, and dinner on demand. Our breakfast menu includes eggs, omelettes, bacon, toast, sandwiches, pancakes, and fruit salad. For lunch and dinner we have, for example, salads, soups, spaghetti, barbecue, grilled fish, beef and pork with chips or mashed potatoes.

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property. We also offer transport services at $100 to Masaka Backpackers from Entebbe and Airport transfers which takes only about 2hours and 30mins

We are selling souvenirs made by local artists.

Rooms & Camping

Whether you are traveling solo, as a couple, or in a group, we have accommodation that fits your needs. Choose from private rooms (with shared or private bathrooms), dormitories, or our fully equipped holiday house for extra comfort and privacy.

Camping guests are welcome to set up their tents in our large garden. Clean and accessible sanitary facilities are available for all campers

We are happy to host both individual travellers and tour groups.

Leisure activities
